The four stages of the method: listening, silence, word, rite

The four-stage method of Studio Esoterico Cornelio, listening, silence, word and rite, with the Master's guidance on reading the Law in a low voice.

Knowing the sentences of the Law is not enough: what matters is the way you receive them. This is why the Master proposes a method in four stages, listening, silence, word and rite, together with precise guidance on how to use the voice. It may seem excessive care over details. In reality it is precisely the way of reading that distinguishes intellectual study from an experience that transforms.

First stage: listening

The method begins with the slow reading of the sentences, one at a time, in a low voice. The term chosen is not "reading" but "listening", and the difference is significant. Reading is an activity performed on the text; listening is letting the text act on us.

This is why the voice is an essential part of the method. Reading silently with the eyes lets you go fast; pronouncing the words forces you to slow down and to feel them with your body as well.

Second stage: silence

After listening comes silence, which according to the Master is often longer than the reading itself. In this stage you do not try to explain what you have read. You do not comment, take notes or compare it with other texts.

It is the hardest part for those used to understanding by analysing. The mind wants to assign a meaning immediately, to connect, to classify. The method asks you to suspend this reflex and let the sentence work on its own. What is understood in this way tends to last longer than what is understood by reasoning.

Third stage: the word

The third stage is meditation on the Sacred Names: Nuit, Hadit, Ra-Hoor-Khuit, Aiwass, Thelema, Agape, Abrahadabra. They are pronounced syllable by syllable, with brief pauses.

Here the word changes nature. It is no longer a phrase to understand, but a sound to inhabit. Each name becomes a point of concentration, a way of gathering a whole area of the teaching into a single word.

Fourth stage: the rite

Finally the rite, the moment when everything is gathered. The voice becomes a whisper, the final word fades into silence. The rite adds no new content: it brings listening, silence and word together into a single, complete gesture.

Guidance for the voice

In the first room of the Temple the Master has gathered some rules on how to speak the Law. Here they are, summarised with commentary.

  1. A soft voice. Almost a whisper. A shout scatters; a whisper is a form of respect, both towards the words and towards whoever hears them, even when the only listener is you.
  2. Each sentence as a revelation. Before saying it, you let it form within you. After saying it you fall silent, counting slowly to seven.
  3. The gravity of the sentences. They are said slowly, lowering the tone on the last word. This vocal gesture gives the phrase a sense of completeness.
  4. Names marked out. The syllables are separated by short silences, like tolling bells.
  5. Reverberation. The speaker imagines a nave above them and waits for the echo to fade before continuing.
  6. A silent close. The last sentence is not pronounced forcefully: it fades away. The silence that follows is part of the rite.

An example applied to one sentence

Take the third sentence: "Every man and every woman is a star". Here is how you travel through it with the method.

  • Listening. Sit down and let the sentence form within you. Pronounce it in a low voice, slowly, lowering the tone on "star". Count to seven.
  • Silence. Remain without words for a few minutes. Do not ask what it means. If images, faces or memories arrive, let them pass.
  • Word. Pronounce the name Nuit, because it is in Nuit's sky that every star lives. Separate the syllables where the name allows it, and wait for the imagined echo.
  • Rite. If it is evening, you can place the sentence in the fifth step of the rite, repeating it three times, each time more softly.

The whole process can take a few minutes or an hour. There is no right length, but there is an order.

The warning about haste

To those learning the method, the Master addresses a constant warning: do not hurry. Whoever rushes loses their orbit. The method does not work if it is carried out as a procedure to be completed. It works if each stage is lived in full, even at the cost of spending a whole week on a single sentence.

In short

  • The Studio's method has four stages: listening, silence, word and rite.
  • Listening is slow reading in a low voice; silence, often longer, gives up explaining.
  • The word is meditation on the Sacred Names, syllable by syllable; the rite gathers everything.
  • The rules of the voice, whisper, pauses, gravity and echo, turn reading into experience.
  • Haste is the main obstacle: one sentence lived is better than many read.
