The expansion of consciousness: the sky within every star

The expansion of consciousness for Master Cornelio: ripples in water, the sky within the star, why it is no escape from the world, and a first exercise.

The seventh sentence of the Law is a word of Master Cornelio that completes the image of the star: and the whole universe lives within it. It is not enough to say that every being is a star; one must add that every star contains the sky. From this insight comes what the teaching calls the expansion of consciousness. It is a phrase that circulates widely, often with vague meanings. In the Law, however, it has a precise sense, and some features that set it apart from similar ideas.

Ripples in water

The Master describes expansion with a simple image: a stone falls into water and the ripples widen, one after another, until they are lost in a space that no longer has edges. That boundless space is Nuit.

The image suggests three things. Expansion starts from a precise point, the centre, Hadit. It happens gradually, ripple after ripple, not in a sudden leap. And it does not do away with the starting point: the ripples exist because there was a centre from which they were born.

Point and space: two faces of the same reality

In the seventh sentence the Master names Nuit and Hadit together as two faces of a single reality. It is one of the deepest passages of the teaching. One might expect that expanding consciousness means abandoning one's centre to dissolve into space. The Law says otherwise: centre and space are not in competition. The more rooted you are in the point, the more the circle can open.

This is why the sentence says that the universe lives within the star, and not that the star is lost in the universe. Each person's singularity is not erased: it is discovered to be vaster than was believed.

Not an escape from the world

A frequent risk, on many spiritual paths, is to use inner experience as a refuge from concrete life. The teaching clearly rules this out. The expansion of consciousness does not lead away from the world; it makes ordinary life transparent.

What does this mean? Everyday things stay the same: work, home, people. But they stop being opaque. Through them you see something wider. A trivial gesture, like making coffee or walking to the bus, can be lived with the awareness of belonging to an infinite space.

How to recognise the difference

A few signals help distinguish authentic expansion from escape:

  • After expansion you return to your responsibilities with more clarity; after escape you put them off with more irritation.
  • Expansion makes you more attentive to others; escape makes them seem like disturbances.
  • Expansion does not need to be repeated compulsively; escape demands going back to the refuge ever more often.

Not a conquest, but a surrender

The Master adds a clarification that changes the attitude with which one approaches the practice. It is not about conquering inner space, but about ceasing to defend yourself against it.

Many seek expansion in the same spirit in which they train for a race: effort, goals, measuring progress. In doing so, they stiffen precisely what ought to open. The teaching suggests the opposite: lower your defences, stop gripping. Vastness does not need to be reached, because it is already there. It only needs to be let in.

Silence as the place of experience

According to the Law, this experience comes in silence, at the end of the rite. Not during the reading, not while the names are being pronounced, but afterwards, when the words have faded. This is an important detail: whoever seeks expansion while speaking or thinking pushes it away. Whoever lets it come when everything is still is more likely to notice it.

An exercise to begin

Here is a simple practice, consistent with the image of ripples in water:

  1. Sit in silence, eyes closed, at the end of the rite or at a quiet moment.
  2. Bring your attention to the centre of your chest, as a starting point.
  3. Widen your attention to your whole body, then to the room you are in.
  4. Widen it to the nearest sounds, then to those further away: the street, the wind, the silence beyond.
  5. Imagine the sky above the house, then beyond the clouds, then the starry space.
  6. Without leaving the centre, let all of this rest within you.
  7. Stay a few minutes, then slowly return to the room and open your eyes.

Do not worry if at first the exercise seems to be only imagination. The teaching reminds you that there is no need to hurry.

In short

  • The seventh sentence states that the whole universe lives within every star.
  • The expansion of consciousness proceeds like ripples in water, from the centre towards a space without edges.
  • Point and space, Hadit and Nuit, are not in competition: the more rooted you are, the more you can open.
  • It is not an escape from the world: it makes ordinary life transparent.
  • It is not to be conquered but welcomed, and it comes more easily in the silence after the rite.
